A Tribute to Juan OโGorman: Honoring a Legacy of Muralism and Mexican Identity
In October 2023, the Universidad Nacional Autรณnoma de Mรฉxico in San Antonio (UNAM San Antonio) unveiled a remarkable Dรญa de Muertos ofrenda in tribute to the visionary artist and architect Juan OโGorman. The altar featured a breathtaking floor painting crafted from colored rice, honoring OโGormanโs profound contributions to Mexican art, architecture, and public memory.
Known for his masterful integration of Mexican identity into visual spaces, Juan OโGorman left a lasting mark on San Antonio through his mosaic mural Confluence of Civilizations in the Americas, created for Hemisfair ’68. His most ambitious work remains the exterior of UNAMโs Central Library in Mexico City, where natural-stone mosaics form a monumental narrative of Mexicoโs cultural and historical evolution.
As part of this cultural celebration, iLaCatrina was honored to participate by presenting a symbolic Catrina icon inspired by OโGormanโs legacy. This figure was designed as a living sculptureโher hand-painted attire merging elements of his most notable buildings, geometric compositions, and Aztec motifs. The icon reimagines Juan OโGorman himself as part of the muralist tradition he helped define, standing at the intersection of architecture, identity, and ancestral memory.
Through this collaboration with UNAM San Antonio, iLaCatrina continues its mission of transforming heritage into art, celebrating those who shaped Mexicoโs visual language and helped define its cultural voice.
