La Malinche, also known as Doรฑa Marina, was sold into slavery at the tender age of 12. She became Hernรกn Cortรฉsโs trusted interpreter, advisor, and later the mother of his son, Martรญn, one of the first mestizo children in Mexicoโs history. Her fluency in Nรกhuatl, Maya, and Spanish made her instrumental in facilitating communication between the Spaniards and Indigenous leaders, including Moctezuma, the last Mexica emperor.
She aided the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire by helping Cortรฉs negotiate alliances with Indigenous groups opposed to the Mexica. To some, she represents betrayal of her people; to others, she is a survivor who adapted and endured amid the chaos of colonization.
Our Catrina pays homage to this controversial and complex womanโholding the banner Cortรฉs used in 1521 to declare New Spain, wearing a replica of Moctezumaโs headpiece displayed in the Museum of Vienna, and crowned with an artist-inspired interpretation of the regal crown seen in historical illustrations.

REPLICA OF THE “PENACHO DE MOCTEZUMA“
A true masterpiece of cultural tribute. Our replica of Moctezumaโs legendary penacho was crafted using 6 distinct types of feathers, with every gold elementโnumber, color, position, and shapeโfaithfully recreated. The original headdress is housed in Vienna, but iLaCatrina brings it to life in a way never seen before. This isnโt just fashion, itโs legacy reborn. The real Penacho de Moctezuma is over 500 years old and currently on display at the Weltmuseum Wien in Austria. Revered as one of the most iconic pieces of Mesoamerican heritage, it has long sparked debate over its rightful home.
