Catrina Escaramuza honors the elegance, skill, and cultural pride of charrerรญa, Mexicoโ€™s national sport and a living art form. Rooted in the cattle herding traditions of colonial haciendas, charrerรญa began with the arrival of horses to Mexico in 1519, brought by Spanish conquistadors. Over time, Mexican horsemen transformed these working skills into stylized exhibitions, with the first public displays emerging in the late nineteenth century.

The first official presentation of charrerรญa in New York took place in 1889, following earlier exhibitions in Mexico and Europe during the 1880s. This marked the moment when the elegance and skill of Mexican charros were formally introduced to audiences in the United States. In 1933, the Federaciรณn Nacional de Charros was established in Mexico City, and the Mexican government formally recognized charrerรญa as a national sport. This recognition came as part of a broader cultural movement to celebrate and protect Mexican traditions during the presidency of Abelardo L. Rodrรญguez.

Within this tradition, the escaramuza charra stands as the womenโ€™s discipline, an eight rider formation that performs intricate synchronized patterns at full gallop. It is a display of precision, bravery, and grace, elevated by the beauty of traditional dress.

The attire of Catrina Escaramuza is an authentic, elegant made-to-order gown crafted in Mexico by Camelia Mexican Boutique in collaboration with iLaCatrina. This design reflects the flowing lines, vibrant colors, and ornate lace of the traditional escaramuza dress, allowing for both movement and grandeur. Each detail pays tribute to the artistry of Mexican craftsmanship and the enduring spirit of its equestrian heritage.

Catrina Escaramuza is a living symbol of discipline and beauty, an icon who carries forward the tradition of charrerรญa with the same pride and elegance that has defined it for generations. to us each year.

Special thanks and recognition to the San Antonio Charros Association president Edmundo Rios Jr and Reina Escaramuza Arlet Landero for their support in making this tribute possible.
